Keepin Me On My Toes

Yesterday we welcomed three more beautiful kids.  After participating in Bellas birth it was easier for me to see what the early signs of labor are.  So I brought May Daisy, one of our Sable Saanen does, up into her birthing stall late in the morning.  She was looking good and ready.

I gave her a bit of grain and within a couple of hours she went into labor (about 10 minutes before I had to leave to pick up my son...great timing!).  I had just enough time to watch her birth the first kid (back feet first), dry off the face, and call my neighbor, who once again graciously rushed over.

When I got back home 40 minutes later, two more healthy kids awaited us.  Three girls!  Way to go May Daisy!  Within an hour she pushed all three out just like that.  Birth is so amazing.

With no help from us she licked them all dry, chewed off the cords, and ate her placenta while the little ones found her teats.  What a great mamma she is.  Arent they cute how they are up on their feet, ready to explore the world, only a day old.

This morning when I went to check on May Daisy she had an engorged udder.  It seems the kids were having a hard time latching on to such full teats.  Once I milked her, the kids were able to nurse easily.   (I also gave her some Ibuprofen to help with the inflammation.)  We will milk her several times a day until her swelling goes down and feed the nutrient rich colostrum to the kids.

This little one below is a tad smaller than the others so she will get some special attention and extra manual feedings.

Whew, this farming business sure does keep you busy.  Looking forward to fresh raw milk once again.  And CHEESE!!!

Many Uses of Stinging Nettles

Technically it is still winter but spring is filling the air and that always means one thing to me...almost time to harvest stinging nettles.  It may still be a little early but this warm spell has got me itching to get out to the woods.  When I was in herb school this is one plant I got to know very well.  After drinking a quart of nettle tea every night for 2 weeks, I watched my skin and hair glow and my energy sore.  Nettles is definitely a healing plant so if you dont know about it, learn more and if you just forgot, now is the time to use your green allies for spring cleansing and rejuvination!
I just recieved a wonderful recipe from a friend that has been passed down for generations from her grandfather in Germany.  I can not wait to try it out.  (Thanks Anna!)

Stinging Nettle Liquid Manure?
Stinging nettle liquid manure has balancing and healing properties, stimulates growth and chlorophyl production. Worms love soil that is fertilized with this manure.

-Use the whole fresh plant cut in pieces. (possible to use dry plants as well)
-Prepare a plastic, ceramic, or wooden pot or barrel (no metal pots).  Put in as many plants as you have.  Add enough water so that the plants are covered (best if you have rain water or use water that has been standing for a couple of days in the sun), cover with a piece of chicken wire to avoid small animals from falling in.  Dont fill the pot to the top because the liquid will foam during the fermentation process. Let the pot stand in the sun for about 2 weeks. Stir at least once a day.

-A smell will develop and might offend your nose, so dont keep it too close to the house.

-The process has finished when the liquid has a dark color and doesnt foam anymore. Now you can cover the barrel with a lid. Dilute the liquid 1:10 or if you have used a small pot with a lot of nettle plants, 1:20 and water your garden with it.

-Other herbs to try: Symphytum/ Comfrey - lots of protein, the liquid manure is rich in nitrogen and potasium, good as tomato fertilizer (Symphatum can be combined with stinging nettle to make the manure)

-You can use all sorts of herbs combined: chamomile, mint, majoram...... try experimenting! You can also add some manure from chickens or cows (without the straw) or ripe compost.

-Use the liquid manure on your compost - that is the safest way. Otherwise make sure that you dilute it enough and dont spray over plant leaves but water the soil.

There are so many uses for this extraordinary plant.
(Feral Kevin has an inspiring clip on juicing fresh nettles, www.feralkevin.com.)

You can try making nettle soup...

or nettle quiche...

Colors of Summer

Every great dream begins with a dreamer.
Always remember, you have within you the strength,
the patience, and the passion to reach
for the  stars to change the world
~ Harriet Tubman

These summer days have been long, rising early and heading outside for chores can feel less than desirable.  But the early morning hours are so preciously quiet, filled with bird songs, cool air, a vast sky, and the slight touch of dew.  There is so much to be done in a day.  Waking before the sun makes the day longer, a secret farm women (and men) must have known forever.

As the day is slowly beginning to unfold, I pause to appreciate some of the vibrant colors nature is producing.  Gravensteins in the orchard have been dropping like by the bucketful during the windy nights.

An abundance of greens and purples decorate the garden with splashes of orange pumpkins everywhere, no longer able to hide under their large leaves.  Tomatoes starting to ripen on the vine, juicy red, yellow, gold, Green Zebra, and Purple Cherokee.

Japanese Tricolor corn takes center stage in a bed by the barn, while the heirloom Bloody Butcher corn towers over our heads.

Strawberry sun tea steeps in the driveway.

A satisfying experiment, Tree Spinach dazzles us with her hot pink inner leaves.

The Blue Hubbard squash are forming down the hill, soon to be a knobby deep blue gray.

The big white rooster continues his crow while sleepy hens emerge from their slumber.  (The ducks who have been awake most of the night are the party animals around here.)  And an eager, hungry, orange jersey awaits her breakfast of alfalfa and grain.  How does she always know there is just an apple or two in my pocket for her?  It must be that nose!

Yes, there is always something to be done but summer on this little homestead is a marvelous place indeed.

On The Free Tip

free wooden wine boxes for our CSA
Scavenging has become a way of life for us.  There are so many amazing resources out there people just throw away.  Yes its cliche, one persons trash is anothers treasure...however when you are farming on a shoestring all that "trash" is good as gold.  Perhaps scavenge is not the right word; what we do is more like salvage or glean.  Besides livestock feed, almost all our resources are free.

leftover Chinese broccoli and bok choy starts from a community garden

From fencing off craigslist, organic seeds from the seed library, wine boxes and pallets for seed flats, straw bales for animal bedding and mulch, vegi starts from the garden club, bamboo cuttings as supplementary feed, truck loads of horse manure from the stables up the street, truck loads of wood mulch from the neighborhood tree trimmer, to more truck loads of pumpkins after Halloween to feed the livestock.  I could go on and on, its all about the FREE stuff.

timber bamboo cut down by a neighbor, we used to build a trellis for squash

But whats best about all this is that most of these are things we actually need and some are just fun to have or useful materials for our creative endeavors.  We save tons of money recycling and reusing.  The downside?  Sometimes we wait to get that item we really need/want.  (Which makes us think twice about how badly we really need it!)  Or once in a while we bring home something that takes up space until its perfect use is discovered.

old straw bales we use for animal bedding and mulch

And the upside is that we have the ability to create our farm life with stuff we find while we make choices to spend our hard earned money on other things (or save it!)  Not to mention we can tread lightly as consumers while focusing on producing more of what we need.  It really is a win/win situation.

What kinds of free stuff do you re-purpose out there?

Pilgrimage for a job Interviews

My job search has resulted unsuccessful so far. Should I be concerned? Well, Im not. I have been applying to positions I know I could be a great ad to the companies out there, but Im still to write my thesis, I suspect no one is going to employ me before this literary burden is done and over. Nevertheless, let me share a personal view on the NOs I got through template rejection emails - Theyre the ones who missing on a great employee!

I am eager to get my first interview, and as part of that process it comes natural to me the need to acquire some interview skills. Honestly, I am more and more inclined to believe that all this being picked for a job is but luck, but in order to be lucky you need to make yourself visible to others. Then, and only then can you get lucky.

Doesnt this job searching and applying resemble a nearly-juvenile Friday night in a discotheque? Nice words, pitch properly, dress accordingly, sell yourself and pray to be seen. Yes, applying for jobs is just like that!!!

***

This post is part of a series of articles I posted under the pilgrimage for a job tag. You can find the previous articles by fetching the toxic up there on the left side.

I couldnt close this first chapter without going through what I found of juicy and pedagogical concerning interviews. How to behave, what to say, what not to say, where to look, what are they made of. These and other resolute questions always populate our minds when we are shortlisted for an interview. Since I am really inclined to abandon academia and join the industry (fingers crossed) most of the pages I have searched point out towards an exit from academia. I hope you find interest in all this information I collected.

The Dos and Donts of interviewing for a non-academic role

1. Do make eye contact, have a firm handshake, smile and stop looking at the floor
The first exchanges of energy are crucial and if one comes out as confident and friendly, chances are that they are going to like us a lot more. Lets make it easy for them to like us then. And first impressions are extremely hard to change. :)))))))))))))

2. Bring up your market research notes
Interviewers hate unprepared interviewees. You dont want to come out as lazy or not knowing exactly what youre there for. Research the job role, research the company, research the market youll be working in. The more you know the more confident youll be and they will sense that straight away. See it as a company meeting where youve taken your notes to share with your superiors.

3. Maintain a professional composure throughout
Regardless of whatever approach you interviewer stands for, you are the one under scrutiny so dont relax to the point of losing your professional attentive attitude. Yawning, vulgar jokes or simply thinking it is for you to spread legs and cross arms, it is totally unacceptable.

4. Ask questions. They need you as much as you need them.
Have some dignity for gods sake! They are looking for your kind of talent; this is not X-factor where Simon Cowell offends everyone, babbles whatever crazy adjectives he thinks of and is applauded by millions of people in need of being entertained. This is going to be your bosses and colleagues. You need to know them beforehand, so make use of this opportunity before you sign for some guys who couldnt care less about your needs.

5. Follow up notes are not kissing ass but polite reminders.

Mention something particular in your follow-up note. Try mentioning some points in common between you and the interviewer, but dont lose your grip thinking youre old time buddies. Just make sure he will remember you for something good.

Keys to overcome a telephone interview job successfully

1. In this case basic common sense applies. Avoid public areas where noise can be a constraint.

2. Be prepared and open wide your CV to answer straight away to any of the key questions on your experience and skills.

3. The way you answer questions is ever more important than in a face-to-face interview. Here, mistakes cannot be made inconsequential with a smile or a gesture. Listening can help you hit the bulls eye later on by answering properly to a tough one.

4. Its all about your tone of voice when all else is discarded. Image is not present in a phone call, so in the end you will also be assessed for your safe and constant tone of voice.

5. And yet again the follow up. Track the call with an email by thanking the opportunity and reinforcing your motivation.

What one should be asking at a job interview

Ask about everything you find pertinent. Think outside the box. If you are going to ask just for asking then please keep quite. Focus on the good and the bad of doing such job, if there will be training, an example of a typical day in the role, if there is way to progress and climb up the ladder, why do they think theyre good a company for you; ask about their mission, values and culture. As you see there is a lot to ask about!

This is what I found for myself and for you also. Make sure you read Liz Ryan post on LinkedIn entitled "Its an Interview, Not an Interrogation", it is quite interesting and will reduce your panicking. And if you are over 40 by any chance, please make sure you read Bobby Edelmans article "Over 40? How to sell yourself at a job interview", everyone alive will be 40 one day, better get ready because the job market is a cold b...

Thats it! Come back this Friday to help me blow the candles of the 5th anniversary of The Toxicologist Today. 5th!!!!!! Awesome.

Eventful Day

Today started like any normal day, the sun was peeping through the clouds and fog. I figured the weather was done and the drama was over. Oh how wrong I was.

These two photos are from Saturday morning.

These photos are from this morning.

Our waist high letterbox is underwater roughly in the middle of this photo.

This is the tree that decided to fall down, just missing the house, swing set and cars parked out the front. One car which had just been unbogged from the driveway. Not our car. Needed a tractor to get this one out. We have a lot of holes to fill in once we dry out.

Video of Blogging Microbes available online

The video recording for the event I organised and hosted on the 19th of September 2014, "Blogging Microbes - Communicating Microbiology to Netizens", see Here and Here, is now available online.

The editing was performed by James Gurney (one of the speakers), and even though there are some missing parts due to camera issues, I believe that the video gives a nice idea of what was discussed and debated.

3hrs 4 x 4WD 8 people 26 Sandbags

I had been wondering what I was going to write about for farming Friday. I had nothing prepared. Nature kicked in and helped with a story.

The carport.

The carport 1 hour later. It did get higher but I was far too busy by then

Where it flows after the carport.

The carport again after I wasnt so busy and the water had gone down a little bit

Our Road

Driveway

A few of the many trenches we had to dig to divert water from the house. This first trench is about 50cm deep. It took some digging to the water rushing over the pavers and into the laundry and sewing room.

The garage floor level is lower than the level of this water. There was about an inch of water in the garage.

4WD 1 to bring us sand bags

4WD 2 to save 4WD 1?

4WD 2 being saved by 4WDs 3 and 4

The mess 4WD 2 left

4WDs 2, 3 and 4 set up to rescue 4WD 1

4WD 1 half way out

The sandbags now doing not much as the rain stopped before they got there. Much more rain is predicted so I am sure they will be needed overnight.
